The Legionella bacterium is a naturally occurring organism found all over the world, which can potentially enter the water systems in the built environment. These include domestic hot and cold water systems and commercial systems such as cooling towers, spa pools etc.

In order for the bacteria to cause health effects, a susceptible individual would have to inhale the organism contained within aerosol droplets. Susceptibility depends on a number of factors including age, sex and existing health status.

If you operate systems such as showers, cooling towers etc. that could result in the creation of an aerosol, then they could cause a reasonably foreseeable risk of exposure to Legionella. It is crucial that the entire water system supplying these aerosol-creating outlets is correctly managed, to minimise the risk of the Legionella bacterium multiplying to dangerous levels.

In the UK, this is heavily legislated under the COSHH regulations, requiring formal risk assessment and safety planning and the detailed management requirements that should be adopted, are given in the HSE’s approved code of practice L8 “Legionnaires’ disease- The Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems”.

In many high profile cases, the combination of poorly maintained water systems and aerosol generation have unfortunately led to serious illness and fatalities, leaving those responsible with commercial and criminal liability.
